Orienteering postage stamp: the curtain has risen

On March 6, 2003, the Swiss Post Office will, for the first time, dedicate an Orienteering stamp to the culmination of the year, the OL WM 2003 in Rapperswil/Jona. During an orienteering gala the current World and European champions Simone Luder and Vroni König-Salmi, and the person in charge of postage stamps and philately from the Swiss Post Office in Rapperswil presented the CHF 0.90-valued special stamp "OL WM 2003".

Subsequently, the president of the organizing committee Sönke Bandixen received the first sheet of stamps. "The organizing committee is very glad about the support from the Post Office," Bandixen explained. "I am particularly proud that Switzerland now belongs to the exclusive circle of those countries that do possess an orienteering stamp."

In Switzerland and abroad the stamp will serve as an excellent advertisement for OL WM 2003 over many months. It was designed by the professional artist Thomas Dätwyler from Pfäffikon, who is also an active orienteer. The picture of the stamp gives an emotional look at this fascinating sport. The "priority" A-postage value shows the ingredients of the competitive sport of orienteering in an aesthetic symbiosis: the orienteering map with an intricate topography as the pivotal tool in the background, the dynamics of a young runner on his way in the terrain and finally the compass as auxiliary device, aligned to the target.

The O-stamp is the first stamp designed by the 41-year-old Dätwyler, who also designed the logo of OL WM 2003. As a commercial artist with his own studio Thomas Dtwyler works mainly in the areas of corporate identity and book design.
