Brig

Like no other alpine city Brig unites the wealth of this monumental, charmful mountain world with the amenities of the modern life. Somewhat urban, but with the charm of a quiet holiday city.

Culinary cheese specialities (Fondue, Raclette) lure and the marvelous Valais white wine.

Brig is the ideal starting point for the journey to Zermatt.

Travel

Day trip to Zermatt by train, (for both schedules A and B, no individual traffic)
100 minutes train ride from Brig is the world famous Zermatt. Beside the train station is the Gornergrat-Bahn that takes you directly to the start of the competition at 3131 meters above sea level.

Orienteering

Stage 3: Regional O event in Zermatt
A really unique Orienteering experience at the foot of the Matterhorn. Control sites at over 3000 meters above sea level cause a faster pulse, but not just because of the height! The Matterhorn watches over the runners at all times.

Gornergrat (3131 m.ü.M.)
A 40 minute train ride with the Gornergratbahn brings us to breathtaking scenery, past the event finish area (Riffelberg), up to Gornergrat - the best vantage point of the Matterhorn. The start of Oreinteering and the start point of innumerable hikes. Competition finish area on Riffelberg. From Riffelberg with the Gornergratbahn back to Zermatt (30 minutes) or hiking in the wonderful alpine scenery.

Summer Ski area
on the eternal firn located beneath the Matterhorn, between 2900 and 3900 meters above sea level in the heavenly area of Zermatt.

Brigerbad (Day 5 or 6)
5 minutes from Brig are the special thermal baths of "Brigerbad". The first thermal grotto swimming area in Europe (40-42°). The bathing areas, with 4 different temperatures, is inviting for bathing and recuperation. Completing the offering is the water massage - the largest in Switzerland - and the thermal river bath. There is something for both the young and old.

Museums / Highlights

Zermatt (1616 m)
The idyllic mountain village, at the foot of the Matterhorn, developed into one the most important summer and winter health resorts. In Zermatt no motor vehicles are allowed. Horse sleds and coaches along with electric vechicles are the only permitted tranports. The many businesses ensure a comfortable shopping experience.

Stockalper castle (constructed 1658-1678) (Day 5 or 6)
built by Jodok of Stockalper. In this, the largest of Swiss palaces, many different architectural motives are united. Jodok Stockalper brought to Wallis many lasting memories with his other buildings (such as the Jesuit church and college in Brig).
